About the project

Redefine the system

The music industry is creative and fun, but behind the scenes it can get a bit messy. Repertoire is a company trying to improve the current system of paying out royalties to all parties involved.

Live prototype

The Challenges

Complex content

Repertoire wants to not only pay all parties involved but make the way royalties are divided and stored better and more transparent. A big part of doing this is explaining clearly how all parties are connected and how the royalties of a song are divided.

Getting to understand how everything works and explaining this properly was definitely the hardest challenge to tackle. We tried to tackle this challenge by giving real world examples and giving animations to compliment and add to the textual explanation.

The process

Figuring out the industry

Early on in the process we had close contact with Repertoire in order to get the story and script just right. After that we were able to set up our interactive scrolly telling website where the user sees a new animation alongside the corresponding text.

After designing and coding the prototype we tested our prototype with the users (musicians). The test made clear that mainly the parties who creatively work on the music are the ones who benefited of our concept the most.

concept sketches

During the prototype phase, we realized that the information is dry and complex, so we decided there had to be some form of interaction. We played a lot with scrollytelling ideas, but landend on a sort of tree map that the user travels through by scrolling. To bring life to the entire page we wanted to accompanying the information with animations.

The results

Explaining by example

The result of the website is a new page that would live alongside the existing pages of the website. It would be a way for Repertoire to clearly explain the benefit of their product to their users, which was something they were missing on their website.

Fitting both visually and conceptually to Repertoire the concept website would be a valuable addition to the website of Repertoire. It is a simple, yet strong way of explaining the current problems Repertoire is trying to solve and how they are planning to do so.
